NASA! Where are those High-res Images?

Uploaded 03/03/2004 12:30 GMT

Have you been looking at the NASA pictures from the Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity recently?

They're a little small and grainy huh?  NASA says that the images have been "optimized" for Web downloads.  But what about the millions of users who have broadband and higher?  Where are those high-resolution images that NASA claims can show clear details when blown up to the size of a cinema screen?

Surely they should be available to the wider scientific community for analysis and to others who are just interested in having a good old close-up look at Mars.

It's not as if NASA don't have these images.  The camera specifications on the rovers are awesome and equivalent to most low to mid-range digital cameras you can buy in an electronics store.  Check out the specs for yourself courtesy of  NASA.

Interestingly, there is also a link of the NASA specification page that will show you some sample panoramic pictures from the JPL workshops.  They clearly show how detailed the images are capable of being acquired.

Most intriguing about the images released so far is their really poor resolution.  This is because of the picture format being used - JPEG.  This format supports image compression which saves on some disk space but at the cost of the image detail.  The higher the compression the less detail in the image.  Would it surprise you that the JPEG images NASA are releasing have 100% compression on?  If you try to download an image and zoom in even 10% using imaging software then all you get is blocky pixels.

Does NASA have the high-resolution images?  After all we all know that the higher resolution the picture, the more disk space it eats up.  Well - have a look at the specs for the high-gain antenna used on the rovers for transmitting the data back to the orbiting satellites and then onto Earth.

The rovers are connected to the satellites by a broadband connection and the same is true for the satellites communicating to Earth.

NASA surely has at least one full high-res image that it's received from the rovers.

So - come on NASA - give us the high-resolution images!!

Is NASA Tampering With Mars Images?

Did you know that NASA withheld over 27,000 images of Mars taken by the Mars Orbiter spacecraft?
After a Congressional inquiry and a lawsuit these images were finally released and seem to show evidence of liquid water and vegetation on the Mars surface.

Whatever these images are showing what is certain is that NASA withheld them from your eyes!

Also - can you be certain that the images coming back from the two rovers Spirit and Opportunity have not been "processed" first?

75,000 Mile Asteroid Miss
An asteroid the size of a football pitch has just missed the Earth in one of the closest ever near misses.

The space rock passed well within the orbit of the Moon and missed Earth by only 75,000 miles.
